Latest News Redemption could be affected by new US bill

A new bill is being considered by the California Assembly in the US, which could affect amusement skill games that award prizes.

The AB 1753 bill, introduced by Rep. Isadore Hall III of the 52nd district on February 8, carries a bland technical title referring to its intent to modify the state penal code regarding slot machines.

The proposed bill’s legal language expands the definition of “slot machine” to include any device that is coin-operated and can “sell, deliver or present some merchandise, indication of weight, entertainment or other thing of value.”

This machine classification would be restricted to awarding prizes limited to the value of the price per play and increase penalties for certain gambling violations.

According to US trade press, certain industry members have questioned whether the proposed law could negatively impact the operation of amusement redemption games. However, one clause in the bill explicitly exempts “pinball and other amusement machines or devices, which are predominantly games of skill.”

This exemption might seem to close the matter, but California has apparently had an uneven history of enforcement of gaming statues - including the occasional misinterpretation by law enforcement and misapplication to amusement games.

One leading operator has warned: “If the bill is misread by local poilce and district attorneys to apply to redemption games, it could conceivably shut down the redemption industry in parts of California or in any state or jurisdiction that adopts copycat legislation.”

But, according to attorney Bob Snyder, who has studied AB 1753, amusement professinals don’t need to worry. “I don’t think it even applies to redemption games or the amusement industry,” Synder told US trade press. “There is a specific exemption for amusements which, admittedly, could be spelled out a little stronger.”

Barcrest Critical Update

CRITICAL
SECURITY SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR HORIZON MACHINES

Further to our security bulletin number 22 Barcrest Group can now advise that the updated security software detailed in the list attached is now available. The new software is designed to defeat the current attacks on the Horizon cabinet and increase the protection of the machines coin handling protocol.

When fitting this new software it is ESSENTIAL that a wiring modification is carried out at the same time to the payout port on the MPU5. This involves moving a wire from pin 7 to pin 1 on that port. An Information sheet, ID 69386, detailing this change can be obtained from the after sales team.

Fitting the new software will clear the hopper float, the Note Acceptor BNV key and reset the machine’s volume to the default level. Once the software has been updated these must be reset back to the site’s preferred values using the test routine.

We recommend that this updated software is fitted to the machines at the earliest opportunity. Copies of the latest versions can be downloaded from the Barcrest Group BBS at https://files.barcrestgroup.com or alternatively can be ordered through our after sales team on 0161 830 6549

First Successful Video Arcade Game

The first ever successful video arcade game was in 1972, a simple electronic tennis game called "Pong".

Pong had been invented 14 years earlier by William Higinbotham. Higinbotham, who was then head of instrumentation design at Brookhaven National Laboratory, developed the game to amuse visitors touring the laboratory. The game became so popular, however, that visitors would stand in line for hours to play it.

Higinbotham dismantled his game in 1960. He did not consider it important enough to apply for a patent (a government document that gives an inventor the sole right to manufacture his or her invention for a certain period of time). Twelve years later interest in Pong was rekindled. Atari released the arcade version of Pong, while at the same time Magnavox released Odyssey, a home-television version of the game.
